The Top Three (+2): Reasons Why We Like Open Level Showers

1. They look nice, and isn't that why we remodel in the first place?
2. Fewer materials, fewer costs.
3. You get a bit more space, go on, add a little dance to your singing in the shower.
4. Cleaning the bathroom just got fun, step 1: remove shower nozzle, step 2: spray your bathroom down like you're a kid with a garden hose, step 3: that's it, the water will drain/dry.
5. Great excuse to get heated floors as it helps dry your bathroom after you "cleaned it."

Go Green for St. Patty's Day!

Posted: March 03rd, 2011

If you didn't take advantage of those big tax credits for energy-saving home improvements in 2010, you have another chance in 2011. Homeowners can claim up to 10 percent ($500 maximum) on eligible projects in 2011. Some states have additional credits, as well. View them all at: http://www.dsireusa.org/

At least seven energy-saving home projects are available for federal tax credits this year. They include upgrades to heating and air conditioning systems, roofs, insulation, windows and doors. Generally speaking, the biggest energy drains in most homes are air conditioners, large appliances and water heaters. All of which can be incorporated into your remodel.

Signature Kitchen of the Month

Posted: March 01st, 2011

A small family that's big on entertaining, this Louisiana clan had felt cramped in their previous kitchen. Craving an expanded space with a place for everything in their new home, they envisioned a surplus of storage and spots for appliances amid a delectable array. They hired Randall Shaw of Nordic Kitchens & Baths, Inc., who helped realize their desires while also incorporating eco-conscious product choices.

Of all the challenges, Shaw's biggest was incorporating the appliance suite while allowing enough space (and then some!) for stowing culinary necessities and other foodstuffs. On top of that, Shaw had to contend with the issue of balance and symmetry. While the space needed to be accessible, it also had to be beautiful. Never one to back down from a challenge, Shaw employed a host of dexterous design techniques and-voila!-problem solved. Some cases in point: Not only do they function as working drawers, but all the drawers under the cooking appliances also provide a down-draft mechanism. What looks at first glance like a stainless steel refrigerator actually is a cleverly disguised pantry that corrals many a kitchen ware.

Other design bona fides include sushi-bar-style seating, a disappearing food prep area shrouded behind lateral swinging doors, and 5-inch-thick eco-friendly countertops.

EPA Lead Law

Posted: April 02nd, 2010

EPA lead paint law goes into effect April 22
Published on March 25, 2010
by Emily Udell

Steven Rappaport is looking for a contractor to redo the kitchen floor in his 1909 home in San Francisco's Mission District, and he wants to make sure the renovation won't expose him to any toxins that might be lurking in the paint or materials used to construct his Victorian-style abode.

"I look for the sensitivity of the contractor to see whether they seem to be aware that it's an issue," says Rappaport, who is relying on his best judgment by interviewing prospective flooring companies about what they'll do to contain hazardous substances, but after April 22 a new Environmental Protection Agency law will help him with his hiring decisions.

THE DETAILS
The federal regulation — known as the Renovation, Repair and Painting Program — holds contractors responsible for following strict protocol to minimize and contain lead dust during home improvements on residences built before 1978, the year lead paint was banned in the U.S. According to EPA estimates, some 37.8 million homes and child-occupied facilities will fall under the new rule. While some contractors and homeowners say complying with the new law will drive up costs, many hail it as a positive step toward protecting children, pregnant women and others from lead poisoning.

A few states, including Wisconsin, Iowa and North Carolina, so far have adopted their own Renovation, Repair and Painting programs, which allow them to institute more stringent rules and have more local oversight. The EPA is hoping other states will voluntarily get aboard in coming months.

WHY IT MATTERS
Experts say anyone with concerns about lingering lead-dust hazards should consider hiring professionals licensed to conduct testing and abatement. Member Alison Stevens discovered her son Trevor had an elevated lead blood level after having some exterior painting done on her 1890 home in Arlington, MA, last year. After the incident, her family had their home lead tested and abated. "Lead dust hadn't even occurred to me as a source of concern," says Stevens, whose son now has a healthy lead level. She says the new EPA regulation offers peace of mind for future renovations.

Remodeling Cost vs. Value Report 2009-10

Posted: November 23rd, 2009

As prices of homes have creep lower, so does the value of remodeling investments. This trend has been seen for 4 consecutive years and is predicted to continue. However, small-scale remodeling projects are on the rise! Experts predict that if the economy begins to improve, homeowners will start investing in more major remodeling projects, but for now there is more of an emphasis on the bare essentials that influence buyer decisions. The Southern states have lower construction costs and the recouped value is above the national average despite a lower projected resale value.

For the Raleigh, NC area, the Remodeling Cost vs. Value report shows an average job cost of $50,391 and a resale value of $36,662 for a major kitchen remodel, therefore yielding a 72.8% recouped value. Bathroom remodels on the other hand, are on the rise since reported in 2007, increasing the cost recouped by 8.9%!

Signature Kitchens & baths Recognizes Cederberg Kitchens!

Posted: November 13th, 2009

Warm and Bright

Two years ago, this family of four bought a house nestled in the woods outside Chapel Hill, North Carolina. While the home boasted a cheerful and welcoming silhouette, the kitchen was congested, dark, and divided by walls. The dining room was also small, offering little opportunity for the homeowners to entertain, and the kitchen had no comfortable access into any other part of the house.

Bill Cederberg of Cederberg Kitchens & Additions got to know this family's everyday patterns. He took out a wall that separated the kitchen from the dining room and made the dining room part of the kitchen, highlighting the windows that lined the wall overlooking the backyard. Now, instead of looking out two small windows when they're standing at the sink, the family members can chat with friends across the bar while doing dishes or engaging in other culinary duties.

The kitchen and dining area are now bright, sunny, efficient, and inviting to large gatherings of friends or intimate family dinners. The kids can sit at the bar and eat breakfast and head right out the kitchen door, which was moved from the original, awkward location through the office. This family now lives in their kitchen, and it's made a world of difference!

Signature Kitchen of the Week!

Timeless Elegance

Ready to embark on a whole house remodel and addition, these Elon, North Carolina homeowners knew the exact style they were looking for when they went to Windsor's Cabinetry for Kitchens & Baths Inc. To bring the vision to life, the homeowners-along with their builder, Donnie Laws-worked extensively with Dale Windsor, Carolyn Taylor, and Leslie Gooding of Windsor's Cabinetry. The lady of the house, who had done her own interior design, also collaborated to create an elegant, seamless aesthetic.
Several challenges had to be overcome to accomplish the look the homeowners desired. Gothic mullion doors, 8-foot-tall twisted posts on each side of the refrigerator, and cabinetry capping out at nearly 10 feet were among the challenges faced. To accomplish this, multiple sources were used. The refrigerator area, for example, utilized twisted posts from Osborne Wood Products, 14-inch capitals from Enkeboll Designs, and multiple moldlngs to the ceiling. From there, Bertch Custom completed thecabinetry and finishing needs.
From furniture base and custom turnings and posts to gothic doors and carved moldings, attention to detail was addressed in every area of this kitchen. At the same time, great functionality was retained for both daily useand entertaining. Learn more about this designer at www.windsorscabinetry.com.

What Does Green Building and Design Really Mean?

Posted: October 05th, 2009

Basically, green building constitutes products, homes, or buildings that have been constructed while taking care to satisfy the following elements: Energy efficiency, resource conservation, and good indoor environmental quality. Green design is the incorporation of these green products and the use of materials produced using environmentally conscious methods.

Below is a comprehensive description of the key green programs in the United States that classify and certify green products, companies, and organizations.

Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED)
http://www.usgbc.org/leed
LEED is a green building rating system that provides standards for environmentally sustainable construction. This system is based on “prerequisites” and “credits,” and projects are rated by how many points they earn out of a possible total of 60 points. There are four possible categories that a project can fall according to the total points: Certified, Silver, Gold, or Platinum. This program also offers professional accreditation to green design professionals.

National Green Building Program (NAHB)
http://www.nahbgreen.org
The National Association of Home Builders has established guidelines to encourage the incorporation of energy efficiency, water and resource conservation, sustainable/recycled products and indoor air quality concerns into building a home. The Green Scoring Tool was created as well as a customizable model for communities to follow when creating their own green building standards. NAHB Green has a national green certification program that has created national educational programs and among other things holds yearly national conferences on green building.

Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP)
http://www.greencabinetsource.org
The ESP was established by The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association to certify cabinetry produced by environmentally responsible companies and meet the established criteria to be considered a green product. Companies and brands are scored on a point system and must score at least 80 out of 105 points in the following 5 categories: air quality, resource management; product, resource management; process; environmental stewardship, and community relations.

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
http://www.fscus.org
The FSC has developed a set of governing principles and criteria for forest management that are applicable to all FSC-certified forests throughout the world and encompass topics from community relations and workers’ rights to environmental impact. Region-specific standards are set up by the Council that must be met before it can accomplish a seal.

Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)
http://www.aboutsfi.org
SSI promotes responsible forest management in North America as well as responsible practices globally. The Initiative includes forest management and chain-of-custody certifications for about 230 facilities, as well as educational and training programs. This organization is an independent and nonprofit charitable organization.

GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI)
http://www.greenguard.org
GEI’s mission is to improve public health and quality of life through programs that improve indoor air. This organization is an industry-independent nonprofit organization that oversees the GREENGUARD certification program. GREENGUARD certified products can be found in the Online Product Guide, an indoor air quality resource, which the Institute provides for free on its Web site.

International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001
http://www.iso.org
The ISO 14001 establishes standards that address “environmental management” and aim to reduce harmful effects of company or organization activities on the environment. The decision to implement the standards is up to the individual organizations and certification is done independently of the ISO.

Energy Star
http://www.energystar.gov
Energy Star is a voluntary labeling program that is the responsibility of both the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. This label is used to identify and promote energy-efficient products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Products bearing this label include major appliances, lighting, office equipment, home electronics etc. and most recently, new homes and commercial and industrial spaces.

WaterSense
www.epa.gov/watersense
This program promotes water efficiency in order to protect the future water supply in the U.S. by putting more water-efficient products on the market and implementing programs and practices geared towards water –efficiency. WaterSense has developed specifications for high-efficiency toilets, faucets and irrigation systems as well as others, and have partnered with retailers and municipalities to spread the word about water conservation and efficiency.
